Three Mountains to Explore

Abergavenny is surrounded by three iconic peaks: Sugar Loaf, Skirrid and Blorenge. Each offers something a little different, but all of them offer some spectacular views of the town and surrounding countryside.

Sugar Loaf is perhaps the most recognisable of the three, with its distinctive peak overlooking Abergavenny. There are several routes to the summit, with the views stretching across the Usk Valley, Black Mountains and Bannau Brycheiniog.

The Skirrid, also known as the Holy Mountain, offers a rewarding walk through woodland and open mountainside before reaching its summit. At the top, you can discover the remains of St Michael’s Chapel alongside panoramic views across the surrounding landscape.

For another spectacular viewpoint, head to the Blorenge. From its open mountaintop, Abergavenny is laid out below, with Sugar Loaf and the Skirrid visible across the landscape.

Walks for Everyone

You don’t need to climb a mountain to enjoy walking around Abergavenny. There are plenty of gentler routes through the surrounding countryside, including walks along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, the River Usk and the River Gavenny.

For those looking for something longer, the Usk Valley Walk offers the chance to explore more of the surrounding countryside, while the Beacons Way provides a much bigger challenge, stretching for 99 miles from Abergavenny through the Bannau Brycheiniog.

You can also explore the Three Castles Walk, linking Skenfrith, Grosmont and White Castle and combining beautiful countryside with some of the area’s fascinating history.
